الاهتمامات البحثية

تتمثل اهتمامات الأستاذ محمد سليم العلويني البحثية في عمل نماذج وتصميم وتحليل أداء شبكات الاتصالات اللاسلكية مع التركيز حالياً على تعدد المدخلات وتعدد المخرجات ونظم تضمين التردد ونظم الراديو الإدراكية وشبكات الاتصالات التعاونية، وشبكات الاتصالات الضوئية، وشبكات الاتصالات متعددة الدوائر. خلال السنوات الأخيرة، عمل الأستاذ العلويني على معالجة تقليل الفجوة الرقمية والوصول الغير المتكافئ لخدمات تكنولوجيا المعلومات والاتصالات في المناطق الجغرافية المختلفة من خلال دراسة وتطوير: (١) أجيال جديدة من الشبكات الفضائية-الجوية-الأرضية المدمجة كحل لتوفير الاتصال بالمناطق النائية، أو الأقل كثافة سكانية، أو التي يصعب الوصول إليها؛ (٢) شبكات لاسلكية جديدة قليلة التكلفة لتحقيق الشمولية الرقمية للمناطق ذات الدخل المنخفض. وقد نشر العديد من الأبحاث حول هذه الموضوعات، وهو مؤلف مشارك في كتاب الاتصالات الرقمية عبر قنوات الاتصال المتضائلة (Digital Communication over Fading Channels) والتي قامت مؤسسة وايلي إنترساينس بنشره الأستاذ العلويني هو زميل معهد مهندسي الكهرباء والإلكترونيات (IEEE Fellow) والجمعية البصرية الأمريكية(Optica Fellow) . كما حصل على العديد من الجوائز في حياته المهنية. على سبيل المثال, حصل على جائزة التقدير من اللجنة الفنية اللاسلكية لجمعية الاتصالات (IEEE Communication Society Wireless Technical Committee) لعام ٢٠١٦، وجائزة عبد الحميد شومان للباحثين العرب لعام ٢٠١٦، وجائزة الإنجاز العلمي والتكنولوجيا الافتتاحية لمنظمة التعاون الإسلامي في العلوم الهندسية في لعام ٢٠١٧، وجائزة الكويت للعلوم التطبيقية ٢٠٢٠، وجائزة تكنولوجيا المركبات لعام ٢٠٢٠ (IEEE Vehicular Technology Society James Evans Avant-Garde Award), وجائزة التعليم لجمعية الاتصالات التابعة لمعهد مهندسي الكهرباء والإلكترونيات IEEE لعام ٢١٢٠, وجائزة الأكاديمية العالمية للعلوم TWAS في العلوم الهندسية لعام ٢٢٠٢. تشمل الجوائز الأخرى اختياره كزميل للأكاديمية الأفريقية للعلوم في عام ٢٠١٨, وعضو في الأكاديمية الأوروبية (Academia Europaea) في عام ٢٠١٩, و كزميل الأكاديمية العالمية للعلوم TWAS فيعام ٢٠٢٢.
