The Cisco–KAUST AI Institute has reached a significant milestone with the launch of its first portfolio of collaborative research projects, moving the partnership from planning to research delivery.
Established in October 2025, the long-term collaboration between Cisco and King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) is designed to advance artificial intelligence (AI) research, develop talent, strengthen industry collaboration, and build the infrastructure needed to support future AI innovation in Saudi Arabia.
The Institute’s inaugural research portfolio spans several areas expected to shape the future of AI infrastructure, reflecting Cisco’s long-term commitment to advancing AI innovation, talent and research in the Kingdom through its partnership with KAUST. The strategic partnership includes financial investment in both research and infrastructure.
AI for more efficient data centers
Researchers will explore how AI can improve the efficiency of large-scale data centers by optimizing workload management, reducing energy consumption, and improving operational performance as demand for AI computing continues to grow.
Smarter, more resilient networks and cities
Two projects focus on AI-powered network assurance, developing technologies that can monitor network traffic in real time, detect anomalies faster, and automate network management across increasingly complex communications infrastructure. The research aims to support more secure and resilient digital networks for future applications, including smart cities.
Digital twins for next-generation infrastructure
Another project will build a complete virtual replica of a modern communications network, from the wireless connections users see to the optical fiber that carries data behind the scenes. Using AI to manage the digital twin, researchers and operators can test changes, identify problems, and optimize performance safely in the virtual world before applying modifications and enhancements to the real network. This supports development and operation of increasingly complex digital infrastructure as the Kingdom expands advanced connectivity, AI-enabled services, and smart-city systems.
AI for sustainable agriculture
The portfolio also includes research into precision agriculture, combining AI, 3D modeling, and real-time sensor data to identify crop stress and disease earlier, helping improve agricultural decision-making and strengthen food security. For Saudi Arabia, where food security and sustainable agricultural production are national priorities, the research has potential to help enable more resilient and resource-efficient farming in arid environments.
Alongside the research program, the Institute continues to develop the infrastructure needed to support long-term collaboration. Planning is underway for the Cisco AI POD, a high-performance computing platform designed to support the Institute’s activities in R&D and AI training, and inference capabilities for future research projects.
