KAUST hosts breast cancer awareness event in Thuwal

King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) organized a community event on October 12 at the Nesma Sewing Center in Thuwal to mark Breast Cancer Awareness Month. More than 150 women and girls from the local community attended, along with partners from the health care and education sectors.

The initiative underscores KAUST’s commitment to social responsibility and sustainable development, and its mission to support public health and empower the Thuwal community through programs that promote awareness, women’s empowerment, and improved quality of life.

The program included educational lectures by medical specialists on prevention and the importance of early detection. Breast cancer survivors also shared their personal stories of courage and resilience. Awareness booths featured creative artwork and educational materials prepared by students from girls’ schools in Thuwal to encourage early health education among young people.

Interactive sessions highlighted early screening, routine checkups, symptom awareness, and risk factors. The Thuwal Health Center also provided seasonal influenza vaccinations, reflecting collaboration between academic and medical institutions to serve the community.

Local partners included the International Medical Center (IMC), Thuwal girls’ schools, and Namat Factory, all contributing activities and resources to support the event. More than 20 volunteers from The KAUST School and the Thuwal girls secondary school assisted in welcoming guests and providing logistical support.

For KAUST, this initiative is one of several ongoing community programs in Thuwal and the surrounding areas that focus on health, education, the environment, and social entrepreneurship, aligned with the University’s vision that knowledge and science play key roles in serving society.

Maha Aldubaiyan, KAUST’s director of Social and Community Development, said the event reflects the University’s commitment to supporting women’s health and empowerment.

“This initiative reinforces KAUST’s role not only as a center of scientific excellence but also as a humanitarian and development partner dedicated to building an informed and healthy community,” Aldubaiyan said.

She praised the strong participation from partners and volunteers, noting that the event exemplifies a successful model of community collaboration that supports national goals for sustainability and social development.

The event concluded with an awards ceremony recognizing participating organizations and volunteers. Attendees affirmed continued partnership between KAUST and the community to launch further awareness programs throughout the year in support of Saudi Vision 2030 and efforts to enhance quality of life.
