Research, Development and Innovation Authority (RDI) launched Technology Transfer Program in collaboration with King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) to accelerate commercialization activities in Universities across the Kingdom.
“Technology Transfer” refers to the process of moving scientific discoveries and innovations from the lab bench into the marketplace, where they can become products, services, or solutions to create impact. The ambition for Saudi Arabia is to become a global leader in research, development, and innovation, with an annual investment equivalent to 2.5% of GDP by 2040, enabled by developing the Kingdom’s technology transfer capability.
The Technology Transfer Internship Program is a first-of-its-kind professional development effort aimed at upskilling five leaders from research institutions across Saudi Arabia to support effective commercialization within Saudi research and government institutions.
KAUST's maturing innovation ecosystem, with an impressive 1,448 patent families and 287 technology licenses, was chosen by RDI to support other kingdom research institutions to create commercialization impact that will have economic and societal benefit.
This partnership supports Saudi Arabia’s broader efforts to encourage engagement and develop a pipeline of skilled talents ready to lead in science, technology, and innovation.
Rooted in global best practices and tailored for Saudi Arabia’s innovation landscape, the program features a blend of in-person training, virtual learning, international mentorship and a final showcase, providing participants with a comprehensive foundation in technology commercialization.
“This program helps ensure Saudi Arabia’s research translates into real-world solutions,” said Ian Campbell, Senior Vice President - National Transformation Institute at KAUST. “We’re proud to work with RDI to build local expertise and strengthen the country’s capacity to commercialize innovation.”
“Investing in people is the foundation of any innovation-driven economy,” said Dr. Yazid Al-Askar, Executive Director of National Priorities and Acting Deputy Governor for the Innovation Ecosystem Development Sector at RDI Authority. “This program aligns closely with our national goals and helps ensure that Saudi Arabia has the talent to bring research to market effectively.”
