King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) and King Abdulaziz University (KAU) have signed a memorandum of understanding to strengthen collaboration in education, training, scientific research, and professional development. The agreement aims to advance academic and technological development while enhancing the capabilities of national and international talent in science and technology.
The signing took place at the KAUST campus in Thuwal. King Abdulaziz University was represented by its president, Dr. Tareef Yousuf Alaama, while KAUST was represented by its president, Professor Sir Edward Byrne AC.
The memorandum aims to establish a comprehensive strategic framework for institutional cooperation between the two universities, including the exchange of expertise and joint initiatives applying artificial intelligence (AI) to medical and clinical fields by leveraging King Abdulaziz University's medical infrastructure and KAUST's world-class technical infrastructure and expertise in AI and data science. The agreement also calls for developing academic programs in marine sciences and creating joint training and professional opportunities that support the development of the national workforce.

Alaama said the partnership with KAU marks a milestone in national integration efforts aligned with Saudi Vision 2030. “The collaboration with KAUST will enable both universities to exchange expertise and develop joint programs in key areas, notably medical applications of AI, marine sciences, and faculty exchange, to enhance the quality of outcomes and contribute effectively to building a knowledge-based economy,” he said.
The memorandum supports KAUST's strategy to expand national academic partnerships and foster a knowledge-driven society built on innovation and excellence.
