We intend to develop scaleable, cost effective and commercializable fermentation-based technologies to address critical challenges in human and animal nutrition and their well being.
Professor Franklin is a Translational Professor at KAUST and prior to joining he was co-founder, board member and CSO of Alameda, CA based Checkerspot, Inc., a biotechnology company focused on development of microalgal strains elaborating tailored triglyceride oils for use in biomaterials, human and animal nutrition and personal care applications. Prior to Checkerspot, he was VP of Discovery and Molecular Biology at South San Francisco based Solazyme, Inc. where he and his team successfully developed a heterotrophic, microalgal based fermentation platform capable of delivering tailored triglyceride oils at commercial scale, leading to a successful IPO in 2011. In 2005 he co-founded Rincon Pharmaceuticals utilizing microalgal technology he co-developed while at the Scripps Research Institute, in La Jolla, CA. Prior to Scripps he was Director of Molecular Biology at Cyanotech, Inc. in Kona, HI, developing cyanobacterial mosquito-larvicidal toxins and leading strain development.
Professor Franklin has always been focused on translating discovery into real world applications that can benefit humankind. For the past twenty nine years his focus has been on developing and commercializing algal biotechnologies for use in human and animal health and nutrition in addition to their use in biomaterials. He is an inventor on over 240 patents and patent applications in the area of algal biotechnology, while co-founding two companies based on microalgal technologies he has dveloped. His specific research focus is on developing and commercializing high protein and lipid containing biomass and microalgal fats and oils for use in human and animal nutrition. He is driven by a desire to find real world, scaleable and commercially viable solutions that can play a role in addressing some of humankind’s most pressing problems including feeding an ever growing population on a warming planet.
