SANS and KAUST sign MoU to strengthen local aviation innovation and technology

Saudi Air Navigation Services (SANS) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) to strengthen strategic partnerships in research, innovation, and the deployment of advanced technologies in the aviation sector.  

This collaboration aligns with SANS’s commitment to leverage KAUST’s distinguished scientific and research capabilities to support digital transformation initiatives and contribute to the development of the national air navigation ecosystem in line with the objectives of the National Aviation Strategy, which focuses on adopting cutting-edge technologies and enhancing safety and operational efficiency standards. 

The agreement was signed by Eng. Saleh Al-Motirey, Chief Technology Officer of SANS, and Dr. Ian Campbell, Senior Vice President of the National Transformation Institute (NTI) at KAUST. This partnership is a shining example of a successful collaboration between the academic and aviation sectors, fostering innovative, technology-intensive solutions founded on artificial intelligence and data analytics to aid air traffic management, boost operational efficiency, and develop national capabilities through technology transfer.

Eng. Saleh Al-Motirey emphasized that the MoU reflects SANS’s ongoing commitment to adopting innovation as a core pillar in advancing air navigation services. He noted that collaboration with KAUST will enable the development of data-driven technological solutions that enhance operational performance and strengthen the safety of Saudi airspace.  

Dr. Ian Campbell highlighted that this partnership represents a unique integration between research and vital industries, affirming that KAUST will harness its deep expertise in artificial intelligence, data analytics, and smart systems to support technology development projects within the aviation sector. 

This MoU directly supports the Kingdom’s national transport and logistics strategy and priorities in aviation and mobility, reflecting a shared vision to build a smart and sustainable air transport ecosystem aligned with Saudi Arabia’s future aspirations.
