The University of Jeddah recently appointed KAUST alumnus Dr. Ramy M. Qaisi as vice dean for scientific research and sustainable development.

Qaisi received his Ph.D. in electrical engineering from KAUST in 2016. He worked in KAUST Professor Muhammad Mustafa Hussain's lab in the University's Computer, Electrical and Mathematical Science and Engineering division, and his research focused on graphene as an "exploratory material."

After joining the University of Jeddah in 2017 as an assistant professor of electrical engineering, he then became director of the Scientific Technology department and vice dean of scientific research. Qaisi also co-founded the Department of Science and Technology at the University of Jeddah.

"It was important for me to establish a new research culture at a recently opened university[—the University of Jeddah]," Qais said. "We are trying to provide quality research that support the national transformation of the Kingdom."

Qaisi noted his experience as one of KAUST's founding batch of students gave him the opportunity to develop fundamental scientific research skills.

He advised students interested in research to strive for self-challenge and to not hesitate in exploring new and unfamiliar ideas. They should also believe in their abilities to achieve great things.

"Your life will never change until you come out of your comfort zone," Qaisi said. "Change begins at the end of the comfort zone. KAUST has changed the way we see things by following the rules and believing in ideas."
