Al Mizmar attracted the crowds at Al Janadriyah
Along with the traditional dance of Al Ardha, the folkoric dance of Al Mizmar also attracted the crowds at Al Janadriyah.
This traditional dance was performed at Al Janadriyah by a group of men from Jeddah, where the dance is most commonly performed. It is also performed in the Mecca and Medina regions.
The dance and song incorporate the sound of Al Mizmar, an oboe-like woodwind instrument and drums in the performance of the mizmar dance. The dance itself involves moving in a specific way whilst twirling a bamboo cane to the sound of the drums.
The drums are an important accompaniment to the performance of the traditional dances of Saudi Arabia. in accordance to the traditional and tribal customs of the kingdom. For the performance of Al Mizmar at Al Janadriyah, the musicians used a single sided drum called a “tar” and a double sided drum called a “tabl”.
The Jeddah dancers and musicians performed the Al Mizmar during the opening week of the Al Janadriyah festival.
