Professor, Environmental Science and Engineering
Using Earth observation, modeling and data analysis tools to create scalable, real-world solutions to global environmental challenges.
Matthew McCabe is a Professor of Remote Sensing and Water Security and an Associate Dean at KAUST. He received his Ph.D. in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the University of Newcastle in Australia and held postdoctoral positions at Princeton University and Los Alamos National Laboratory, U.S. Prior to joining KAUST in 2013, he was an Associate Professor at the University of New South Wales in Australia. Professor McCabe has served on numerous international research committees and coordination activities (G20, WCRP, GCOS, GEWEX) and has been recognized amongst the world’s most Highly Cited Researchers. He was the inaugural Specialty Chief Editor for Frontiers in Artificial Intelligence and the recipient of the 2022 Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz International Prize, one of the leading global water prizes.
Professor McCabe’s research encompasses the modeling and observation of the Earth system, with a focus on terrestrial processes and their linked interactions, particularly as it relates to the water-food nexus, climate change, ecosystems and the environment. A recognized leader in the field of Earth observation, his research explores numerous interconnected and multidisciplinary problems at the intersection of the water-food nexus, climate change, urban and natural ecosystems, and the environment.
