From sports to fitness and fun—KAUST has something for everyone
Members of the faculty, staff and student body and their families are offered access to extensive athletic facilities, which include:
- Three swimming pavilions
- Rock climbing wall
- Billiard and snooker tables
- Exercise facilities staffed with professional trainers
- Tennis courts
- Squash courts
- Racquetball and badminton courts
- 24-lane bowling alley complex
- Baseball and athletic fields
- Basketball courts
- 9-hole, world-class grass golf course (lighted)
- Seaside marina with full yacht and sailing facilities
Exercise and wellness programs also are open to University faculty, staff, students and their families. These programs are designed to meet individual interests and goals, as well as a wide variety of fitness levels. Programs include those for weight loss, stress management, cardiovascular endurance and sports-specific conditioning.
Harbor Sports Club
The Harbor Sports Club features a variety of indoor and outdoor recreation facilities including: sixteen lane bowling alley, multi-purpose sports hall, fitness rooms, saunas, indoor rock climbing wall, group exercise rooms, family swimming pool, ladies’ swimming pool, kids’ swimming pool, three squash courts, meeting rooms, café, billiards & games, an athletic track, and soccer field. All swimming pools have lifeguards on duty, and fitness rooms are staffed by professionally trained instructors.
Al Marsa Club
Located at the KAUST Marina, across from the Beacon, the Al Marsa Club offers a full variety of facilities and services including scheduled and private chartered boat cruises, snorkeling and diving trips, and traditional fishing trips; a fine dining restaurant; conference rooms; and events and catering services.
The Marine Services Guest Care office, located on the ground floor of the Al Marsa Club, manages all guest inquiries and reservations especially for community scheduled and private chartered boat trips such as, snorkeling, cruising, fishing, and scuba diving.
Water Sports / Diving Center
Located in a sheltered bay, the center is equipped with its own training pool, dedicated classrooms, scuba diving retail shop, and shower facilities.
Here you will be able to take the full range of PADI scuba diving courses, from Open Water all the way up to Dive Master, including First Aid and CPR. RYA powerboat courses (level 2) are also offered.
Parks and Playgrounds
With numerous parks and playgrounds located throughout KAUST, residents have the chance to enjoy outdoor recreational activities including jogging, walking, and playing games. Cycling paths can be found in Thuwal Park and Safa’a Gardens neighborhood, and a jogging track, water features, and access to several adjacent football fields are located in Thuwal Park, with a cricket pitch nearby.
Safa’a Golf Club and Academy
The Safa’a Golf Club & Academy is set in the Safa’a Gardens district. Membership or pay-and-play options are available to the community, service providers, and visitors. The nine-hole championship-standard, all-grass course offers a challenging but rewarding golf game for all levels. The course is beautifully maintained and home to over 140 different species of birds, both indigenous and migratory. The Academy is one of the finest in the Kingdom; with full-time PGA qualified professionals available for group and individual lessons. Junior golfers are particularly encouraged.
The clubhouse has a restaurant overlooking the greens, a golf teaching room, a pro shop, a golf driving range, and a golf cart store.
Located near the Golf Course, this 5000-seat stadium is available for large events, ceremonies, and football tournaments. The stadium has hospitality areas and its own media center for televised events.
Self-Directed Groups (SDGs) are special interest groups or clubs formed and run by community members. Current SDGs include:
