Mr. Ahmad O. Al-Khowaiter

Interim Vice President, Economic Development


Mr. Ahmad O. Al-Khowaiter has been appointed KAUST’s Interim Vice President for Economic Development. Previously, he held the position of Interim Provost and helped to oversee the development of academic and research functions at KAUST in collaboration with the team of international experts.

Mr. Al-Khowaiter joined Saudi Aramco in 1984, and has worked for the company in various technical roles in the oil and gas production organizations, ranging from design, project management, commissioning, to operation. In 2001, Mr. Al-Khowaiter led the commissioning and start-up of the Hawiyah Gas Plant, followed in 2003 by the Haradh Gas Plant, two of the largest Natural Gas production and treatment plants in the world. His last role before assuming responsibility in 2006 for the master planning of the KAUST was as manager of the Facility Planning Department responsible for feasibility studies and Saudi Aramco’s capital program. He has served on the board of directors of the Petron Corporation, the largest oil company in the Philippines.

Mr. Al-Khowaiter received his Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals, Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, in 1988; his master's degree in Chemical Engineering (specializing in Advanced Control and Simulation) from the University of California, Santa Barbara, in 1995; and an MBA as a Sloan Fellow from MIT in 2005.
