WEP 2012: Week 1 - The Week Ahead
WEP 2012 offers a wide range of events, lectures and seminars to stimulate the minds of students and members of the KAUST community.
WEP Opening Key Note Lecture, Professor Rolf-Dieter Heuer
Saturday 14 January, 9.30am – 12.30pm, Auditorium, Building 20
Opening WEP 2012 is a Lecture by Professor Rolf-Dieter Heuer, Director General of CERN". Professor Heuer will present some of the reasons for the excitement surrounding the LHC. The LHC is expected to yield insights into the origin of the mass, or the nature of dark matter.
Climate Modeling Symposium Day1
Saturday 14 January - Sunday 15 January, Auditorium, Building 20
Taking place on the opening day and concluding on Sunday 15, January is the "Climate Modeling Symposium". This event will feature leading scientists from the US, Europe and Saudi Arabia talking about the most compelling environmental and climate issues. Speakers include Dr. Kenneth Pickering from the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center and Professor Mansour Almazrouri, Director, Center of Excellence for Climate Change Research.
Hope in a Changing Climate
Saturday 14 January, 7.30pm – 9.00pm, Auditorium, Building 20
The theme of climate change is concluded in the evening of the opening day with a screening of the film "Hope in a Changing Climate" by ecological filmmaker, John Dennis Liu. The film puts forward the view that it is possible to rehabilitate large-scale damaged ecosystems. Following the screening, John Dennis Liu will give a short presentation on climate change topics and participate in an audience discussion.
WebGL and Google Maps
Sunday 15 January, 7.30pm – 9.00pm, Auditorium, Building 20
"WebGL and Google Maps" is the topic of Dr. Bill Baxter's lecture on Sunday 15, January. As a Software Engineer at Google, he is part of the team that has created a new version of Google Maps, which is based on the new WebGL API standard.
Introducing Silent-Power the new concept to replace nuclear power plants in Germany and Switzerland
Monday 16 January, 1.30pm – 2.30pm, Building 9 – Lecture Hall 2325
Dr. Urs Weidmann's lectures on the subject of "Silent-Power" on Monday 16, January. His talk entitled "Introducing Silent-Power the new concept to replace nuclear power plants in Germany and Switzerland" is based on Silent-Power as the first utility, which is built on thousands of micro power plants, which are installed in the basements of the buildings.
Business for Sustainable Development, a Case Study
Monday 16 January, 7.30pm – 9.00pm, Auditorium, Building 20
"Business for Sustainable Development, a Case Study" is the subject of the evening lecture by Mr. Abdulaziz Al Turki, Chairman of Rawabi Holding. The company has activities in construction and engineering, oil and gas, petrochemicals, utilities, power and electrical, telecommunications and IT, marine, trading and manufacturing.
Solar Impulse: A New Vision of Sustainable Development
Tuesday 17 January, 7.30pm – 9.00pm, Auditorium, Building 20
Bertrand Piccard, Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations, will deliver a talk entitled "Solar Impulse: a new vision of sustainable development".
Dr. Bunhead's Crash Test Science Show
Wednesday 18 January, 7.30pm – 9.00pm, Auditorium, Building 20
An event, which is sure to be popular with families and children, is "Dr. Bunhead's Crash Test Science Show", which will take place on Wednesday 18, January. Described by the British newspaper, 'The Daily Mail' as a "pyrotechnic extravaganza", the show will feature exploding hot water bottles, stunt bananas, the Guiness world record potato bazooka and lots more.
