Mr. Henk Kriek

Chief Financial Officer and Treasurer

In April 2013, Mr. Kriek took up the appointment of Chief Financial Officer of King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Prior to joining KAUST, Mr. Kriek spent seven years at the University of Johannesburg (UJ) in South Africa. He held the positions of Acting Vice-Chancellor and Executive Dean of the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences.

In these positions, Mr. Kriek was instrumental in establishing the institution, with 48,500 students and a significantly improved research ranking by more than doubling the research output of the University in the first five years.

As a leading academic and Professor in Management Accounting and Finance at the UJ, Mr. Kriek played a critical role in the Chartered Accountancy Profession in South Africa and was also commissioned to lead an international research project on behalf of the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants.

He led a team on behalf of the South African National Higher Education Department on the financial sustainability of all 23 higher education institutions in South Africa. He was also the inaugural Chairperson of Higher Education South Africa's Finance Executives' Forum until March 2013 and was invited as a speaker on higher education finances on many occasions.

Mr. Kriek was responsible for Technology Transfer and Commercialization at the UJ. He took the lead in promoting the UJ as an entrepreneurial university and undertook a three month sabbatical in 2012 to visit 10 universities worldwide to research the topic. The consequence of which was the establishment of a Solution Centre as an eco-system for industry outreach and collaboration at the University. As Chairperson of the Board and line-manager responsible for the venture, he set up various industry collaborations and launched a successful funding campaign.

Mr. Kriek earned a master's degree in Financial Management in 1994 from the Rand Afrikaans University (RAU). He also holds a bachelor's degree in Accounting from the same university.
