Polyethylene is one of the world's cheapest, most ordinary materials. KAUST researchers transformed it into one of the strongest.
Through a breakthrough materials process, they turned basic plastic into an ultra-light, ultra-strong, non-toxic engineering material – one that rivals the performance of diamond-like carbon. The same feedstock found everywhere on Earth, reimagined for aerospace, renewable energy and advanced infrastructure.
Enabled through KAUST’s National Transformation Institute (NTI), Plastic Diamond is accelerating from lab breakthrough to industrial application. Plastic Diamond is what happens when KAUST research refuses to accept material limits. A commercial manufacturing partnership is now taking it to market.
