Green Magnesium

From Seawater
to Magnesium

On a mission to turn seawater into a magnesium supply chain.

Building a new industrial material from the Red Sea.

For decades, the brine left behind by Saudi Arabia's desalination plants was considered waste. KAUST researchers saw possibility.

Buried in that brine is magnesium - one of the lightest structural metals on Earth, essential for electric vehicles, aerospace and advanced manufacturing. Today, KAUST researchers are developing a process to extract it cleanly and competitively, turning a by-product that already exists at massive scale into a high-value industrial material.

Waste in. Value out. A new supply chain - built from the sea.

IMPACT

Creating Impact
Where It Matters Most

01

Waste turned to strategic resource

Desalination brine - a by-product Saudi Arabia already produces at massive scale - becomes the feedstock for a high-value industrial metal.

02

Sovereign industrial capability

Producing magnesium domestically gives Saudi Arabia ownership of a critical material supply chain - supporting the Kingdom’s EV, aerospace and advanced manufacturing ambitions.

03

A cleaner global supply

Green Magnesium offers the world an alternative to carbon-intensive production - positioning Saudi Arabia as a supplier of choice in a decarbonising global economy.

04

Vision 2030 aligned

Industrial diversification. Resource efficiency. High-value manufacturing. Green Magnesium advances all three - simultaneously.
