For decades, the brine left behind by Saudi Arabia's desalination plants was considered waste. KAUST researchers saw possibility.
Buried in that brine is magnesium - one of the lightest structural metals on Earth, essential for electric vehicles, aerospace and advanced manufacturing. Today, KAUST researchers are developing a process to extract it cleanly and competitively, turning a by-product that already exists at massive scale into a high-value industrial material.
Waste in. Value out. A new supply chain - built from the sea.
