KING ABDULLAH PROFESSORS
KAUST will develop a special category for faculty members called the King Abdullah
Professors – eminent scholars, perhaps with joint appointments at other institutions,
and the residential equivalents of Distinguished University Professors with special
distinction and rank. These senior-research faculty members may compose up to 10
percent of the total faculty size at any time and, in many cases, are likely to
be drawn from scientific disciplines important to the focus of research programs
at KAUST.
KAUST will begin recruiting the founding group
of King Abdullah Professors in 2008. The University will offer them a generously
funded laboratory on its campus and maximum freedom and flexibility in staffing
and operating the lab. King Abdullah Professors are expected to have deep and broad
research science and/or engineering research portfolios, a major portion of which
will be located at KAUST, in areas of critical importance to the University, such
as water desalination, clean combustion, composite materials, applied mathematics
and modeling, and environmental bioscience.
